Boone City of the Blue Ridge Parkway
Daniel BooneBorn in 1734 on November 2, Daniel Boone has become in terms of history as being the best pioneer in America. He was a dead shot and his skill as a hunter was legendary. Boone was able to glide through the forest as quickly as the natives of Oley, Pennsylvania. He lived in a frontier settlement near a wooded area where many Indians lived. He also knew that if he were to be caught by the natives on the warpath against intruders on their land, it could mean being taken as prisoner or an unsightly death. The woods became school to Daniel Boone although he was somewhat challenged in the academic area he excelled in the ways of the wilderness. By the age of 12 he had already been hunting for food for his family. At 16 Boone left Pennsylvania because he felt that his settlement was becoming too crowded, he then made his way to North Carolina. Scenic Highways Take You Back to the French & Indian WarThe French and Indian war was breaking out in 1754 and after a year Boone entered the army in an attempt to help General Edward Braddock against the French. British soldiers were slaughtered as they were ambushed by the Indians. Boone and a man named John Findley escaped and went west of the Appalachian Mountains to Kentucky. After seeing that Kentucky offered much in the way of trapping animals and the riches in the land Boone returned home and married a then 17 year old Rebecca Bryan and settled in the town named for him. The city of Boone sits high atop the Blue Ridge Mountains and over 12,000 students attend the Appalachian State University. Boone is located at the intersection of two scenic highways and a scenic route of US 321 runs West across to Tennessee as East runs into Winston- Salem. Such an important part of history still lives in this wonderful seclusion.
